About
The Python AMS - Adaptive Spool Holder is an alternative to the standard Python Spool Holder. It automatically centers spools with a center hole diameter between ~45 and 60 mm so basically 98% of all common spools. There is an XL version available of the spring as well if your spools have an even larger center hole diameter, that one is suitable for spools with a center hole diameter of around 60 to 75 mm.
The spool core of the holder uses a spring mechanism to automatically center the spools. Having the spool fully centered is important for trouble free operation of the Python AMS.
It uses the same large 135T spool gear, threaded rod, wafer heads and spool holder top as the normal Python spool holder and assembles exactly the same so if you have already printed those you can of course skip them but I'm including them in this upload.
If you've already printed your normal Python stock holder you just need to print the adaptive spool holder core and bottom.
Instead of using the standard Python spool gear bottom, use the one included here and screw it down as per below (black part here):
It has a 2.0 mm thick bottom and it's used so you tighten the spool against the rod instead of the large spool gear, thus preventing bending of the spool gear.
There are versions with an even thicker bottom (5-15 mm) if you wish to center your slim/sample spools against the feeder as well, though these are optional.
Next, screw down the adaptive spool holder core (the orange spring mechanism here). Pictured is the standard version, for spools between 45-60 mm:
To install, just slide the spool over the spring and it will automatically center the spool.
Tighten with the spool holder top, this is the same part that is included in the main Python:
Good to go!
Print Settings
I recommend printing the spool holder in a filament that has strong layer adhesion such as PETG or PA. I've used PETG in mine for testing and they hold up great.
Print the parts in the direction I have set them. No supports are needed. I recommend using 3 walls and 15% gyroid infill. The core spring is quite thin so I recommend using a brim for that part.
The adaptive spool holder core print upside down as there is a 1 mm gap between the spring mechanism and the spool holder bottom in order for it to be able to retract for all spools.
