I created this model after recently moving to Germany. Here they have many more different bins than I'm used to - and everyone is expected to sort the garbage in the right bin (they have bins for plastics/packaging, paper/cardboard, organic, and other - oh, and glass is thrown away separately).

The biggest pain was taking the bins in the home office, bathroom etc and and trying to empty them once a week into the large bins for collection. It was just too hard.

So I dreamt up these overhang bin dividers, that could be printed with labels which has made my life a lot easier. Each type of garbage goes into the right divider from the start, and each week I just empty each divider into the corresponding bin!

I thought this may be useful to others, so decided to make it in OpenSCAD, so that anyone can just enter into the Customiser the measurements of their bin and the number of dividers / labels they want - and be able to generate the STLs simply.

But I have also included (as examples of what is possible) pre-generated STLs of dividers to fit the standard round Ikea plastic bin - and I've added labels in both English and in German - for those that happen to have this particular bin, and just want to print those.

To make the dividers easy to print, I designed them to be printed upside down (with indented label text, which makes it easy to change filament to get contrasting colours) and use curved bottoms on the dividers so they don't need support.

If you are new to openSCAD (very easy to use) or the Customiser on Thingiverse does not work with this script - you can get more information on how to make this work here: https://youtu.be/lGUY1qtC9bw

And here is more details on this model:

Features:

  • Customizer friendly - Parameters divided into sections, to easily find/modify
  • Choose number of rows/columns - Enter in customizer how to split the bin
  • Customise to any bin size - Measure/enter in customiser Top/Bottom/Wall bin dimensions
  • Customise divider heights - Mix and match longer / shorter dividers for use in same bin
  • Easy/supportless print - Designed to print upside down, without supports
  • Labels - dividers can also have labels (or leave blank for no labels)
  • Multi-colour - Creates indented Label text, so can use simple "change filament at layer" slicer scripts to add contrast colour.

Limitations:

  • No "inner" dividers - Because the dividers need to hang on outer bin edge

Print Settings

Printing Tips:

  • The model has been created so that it can be printed (upside down) without supports.

The bottom of the bins use sweeping/angled sections, so that supports are not needed.

  • Using the Customizer, select what your printer is capable of (horizontal span length, max underhang angle) and the script will generate angled sections accordingly.

Slicing Tips:

  • To print without supports, the generated STLs must be oriented with the top lip directly on the build plate (i.e. upside down).
  • If using thin walls (save on filament), it is also advisable to use an outer brim (no internal brim), to minimise warping at corners.
