Printed with:
- stock Ender 3 V2
- Regular PLA
- 0.4 mm nozzle
- 100% infill
- Annealing at 100°C
I wanted to design a phone mount that clips onto the center ventilation grid in my BMW F20. However this proved to be much more difficult than expected.
- Firstly the clipping parts are prone to breaking. The current version should be sturdy enough.
- Temperatures at the dashboard in summer can reach temperatures up to 80°C, and the part simply melts away. The glass transition temperature of PLA is around 60°C, that of PETG around 80°C. According to a video of CNC kitchen Tg can be increased especially for PLA by annealing in an oven at 100°C. However this also increases brittleness. I have opted for annealing PLA at 100°C. However high temperature filaments are also available on the market at might be a better option (PETG, ASA, high temperature PLA ).
- During annealing, the part shrinks. Therefore I adjusted the dimensions, so that the clip fits after annealing at 100°C
I used the phone mount of a broken device, which is screwed on. I might refit one of the cool compliant models in the future.
This is a work in progress, please leave comments how I can improve and which BMW models it also fits.
