The Starfleet Technical Manual published in the 1970's had many detailed plans and drawings of actual sets and props.  It contained some of the first rules of play ever published for tridimensional chess.  However its plans for tridimensional chess weren't screen accurate.  the real thing was kitbashed from found objects and existing chess pieces.  Franz Joseph's plans would result in a chess board thats a lot more playable, study, and refined with even spacing between the boards, uniformly sized squares and unique chess pieces that would later be the inspiration for the chessmen included in the franklin mint star trek tridimensional chess set in the 1990s.

Franklin Mint made these pieces in gold and silver.  Franz Joseph indicates they should be black and white.  I have scaled them according to his plans.  The king is 3.5" tall.  I suspect that the franklin mint release is half scale but I dont have one to measure.  I have uploaded both solid and hollowed out models of these pieces (except the knight as unfortunately I couldnt hollow that one).  I do recommend printing them in resin because some details are rather fine, especially with the queen, king and knight.

Pick any two colors you like.  For each color of course print 8 pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, one queen, and one king.  The hollowed out models will save on resin and allow you to weight them somewhat.

The pieces in the cover photo were printed using my elegoo mars 4 DLP printer.
