When I added a hexagonal mesh to the Voron's skirts, I also wanted that look and the added protection for the fan grills. So I designed this model to fit my needs:

Provide a sturdy mesh that won't break accidentally
Modular to play around with different options and colors without the need for a multi-material setup or filament changes mid-print
A mesh that matches my Voron mesh skirts exactly,
A high airflow option that doesn't affect airflow on the fan side
Compatible with the standard Voron skirt and fan grille parts

Compatibility: I designed the parts for a Voron 2.4 R2, but I assume it should also fit other Voron 2 and Trident printers. Please let me know in case you are using it also with other Voron models and I will update the description.

The Mesh Insert

I came up with a mesh \"inlay\" that runs between the original fan grille and the bracket/fan, with the mesh also extending into the fan grille. There are different options for this mesh insert, for more protection or more air circulation, also for a cut or embossed logo. There is also the option to cover the middle housing of the fan (the ones on the left in the picture below) if you wish to do so for aesthetic reasons (e.g. if you have a fan that doesn't perfectly match your printer's color scheme):

The Retainer

While the mesh-insert is already quite robust, because I did not like the flimsy standard retainers for my Voron 2.4 I modified these retainers to also have the exact same mesh, so that they canbe used in conjunction with the mesh inserts. And the mesh gives the structure significantly more stability:

And Yet Another Option

Besides using the mesh-insert together with the fan grille and retainer (first row in the table below) you can also use just the fan grill with the meshed retainer (second row), perhaps in case you would like a little less contrast in your printer's look :

Print Instructions

Just use your standard Voron profile (with 0.4mm extrusion width); no support needed.

Assembly

Follow the Voron instructions, use the same heatset inserts for the fan grille mounts, and you're on the right track.

The mesh insert must be placed between the skirt and the bracket/fan grille (so that they go to the back of the skirt while the grille is on the front). This is easy to do once you have the parts in hand. Since the mesh insert also snaps into the fan grille, carry out this assembly step while placing the fan grille on the apron part. But don't worry, nothing critical and completely trivial when you hold the parts in your hands.

Additional Skirt Parts

I also created very similar plug-in mesh inserts for the Voron 2.4's and Trident's skirt that match this fan grille mesh perfectly. And in my opinion there are some advantages of the pluggable mesh inserts compared to making the net in the slicer and directly into the skirt part (similar as for the grilles here in this model).
