MICKEY MOUSE PANTS - Pen holder

In this project, we created a pen and pencil holder designed to look like Mickey Mouse pants! This fun, cute design is perfect to add a pop of color on your desk!

The pen holder fits in a 10cm by 10cm constraint box

This project is in a set of Mickey and Minnie Mouse-themed office supplies 

The objective of this project was to design a set of theme-based organizational products. The   Staples finance department has concluded with declining sales, the company would like to ramp up their profits in office supplies by enhancing aesthetics. 

Design Process : 

The first step of the design process was to brainstorm and come up with ideas as a group. The theme chosen was Mickey Mouse. From there various designs were created to hold office supplies based on a central symbol representing Mickey Mouse. The idea was to take the shape of the pants and turn them into a container. This was the image the design was constructed upon. 

From the sketch we turned the pants into a three dimensional object. The first step was to determine the size and scale of the sketch. Then how to create each individual part. It was determined to make the pants as one part and the buttons as separate pieces to glue into the larger structure after each part was printed.  It was decided to create the pants by revolving a sketch to create the spherical base of the pants and then to add the legs and extrude them. It was also later decided to make the sketch more symmetrical and the buttons yellow instead of white. 

The challenge in creating this project came with the buttons. Primarily my group wanted to create two holes in the middle of the sphere that fully penetrated the outer layer. However this design did not work. It was then suggested to create the buttons as separate pieces and create dents that the buttons could fit within without completely cutting through the pants. The challenge was finding the correct size and spacing where the buttons could fit within the pants and be their own separate object. On top of that figuring out how to make the buttons fit into the pants but also be able to extrude out was difficult to ascertain 

In the end the buttons could be placed within the pants and still pop out of the structure.
