This is a very basic part. In my home there is a staircase using old 30x30 square steel tubes as posts.

As you can see the handrail is mounted inside the concrete floor and without the cover it looks quite ugly. Look at the images for prove :D

However, the original plastic covers got lost, broken, started to loosing their original colouring or everything together. Its no longer uniform at all.

I planed to replace those parts for years, but now in lock down mode on Easter I took the time and created a simple model using FreeCAD.

The model has a 0.3mm gap in one of the corners. You can see it on one of the pictures. This and the non massive back of the model gives enough flex in the PLA to slide the 30x30mm tube through. The PLA is stable enough to slide back into the old position. There is no need for glue unless you want it fixated.

As always the FreeCAD model is included, so you can adapt my cover socket to fit your need.

Print Settings

Printer:

TronXY X5

Rafts:

No

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.2

Infill:

42%

Filament: Noyes PLA Black

Notes:

I printed it in default orientation, with support on as there is quite some overhang.

You probably can print the entire thing upside down, too. In that case you may run into several problems.

1) As the entire model only rests on a thin frame and you need very good bed adhesion.

2) If you are forced to use a brim you get the next problem. The brim connects to the surface which is facing up, when the cover is mounted. The side on the bed will become your visible top.

3) The third issue is the same as the second. The overhangs may cause a less appealing look of the cover as - like the brim - the visible part of the model will show upwards.

If you want to save material I strongly suggest to reduce the amount of support by tweaking the slicer settings. Tune your printer to be able to bridge the part and it may look perfect in the end without any supports.
