This a remix of the excellent bindicator model, modified to suit the parts that I had at my disposal.

There are four parts to it:

  • The lid - unmodified from the original
  • The bin - modified very slightly to accommodate the USB-C connection for my chosen microcontroller
  • The baffle - modified to divide the bin into two chambers instead of four, because that's all I need for where I live and it allows me to use a spare offcut of 30LED/m lightstrip that I had
  • The microcontroller bracket - a new original addition

For the microcontroller bracket I've included the FreeCAD design file here in addition to the STL. The bin and the baffle are both available on Tinkercad.

I wrote a series of blog posts on how I built it and got it working.

For the electronics hardware, I chose to use an ESP32-C3 Zero microcontroller and some spare 30LED/m lightstrip.

For the software I'm using ESPhome on the microcontroller connected to my home assistant installation. Home assistant uses the recollect waste integration to get the garbage schedule for my house from the City of Calgary and a couple of automations to translate that into appropriately coloured light for the bindicator.

Model origin

The author remixed this model.

Differences of the remix compared to the original

  • Added a bracket to hold an ESP32-C3 Zero microcontroller
  • Slightly enlarged the hole for the USB port to make it suitable for USB-C
  • Removed the upper and lower fins from the baffle to use two segments only - to fit some 30LED/m light strip that I had lying around
