NASA's Space Shuttle program, officially named the Space Transportation System (STS), operated from 1981 to 2011. The Challenger OV-099 was first built as a test bed for the program, but in 1983, it would take its first maiden flight. The Challenger would go on a total of ten missions, spending 62 days in space and setting many firsts, such as the first woman in space. Sadly on January 28th, 1986, the Challenger suffered a catastrophic failure. 73 seconds after launch, causing the shuttle to break apart, killing the whole crew. The STS program would continue until the Coloumia OV-102 broke apart during reentry on February 1st, 2003. The Final flight of the STS program was Atlanis OV-104 on July 21st, 2011, marking an end to an age of space exploration.
