While setting up a new fileserver, I needed a new Host Bus Adapter (HBA) card to connect a bunch of hard drives to. The Adaptec 71605 can be found used for cheap and it is a great alternative to an LSI card. The Adaptec 71605 runs HOT though and can throw a thermal error if not in a properly cooled case. The solution for a lot of these HBA cards is to slap a supplemental fan on the card to help cool it down.
Unlike tie-wraps, I wanted a more elegant solution so I created my own! For this to work, you'll need to remove the cache daughter card if you have one. Note that if you do this, the card is only useful for HBA passthrough. This won't work as-is if you need it to do RAID. You could modify the Fusion 360 file in that case, though.
You'll need:
Because of the potential for heat involved, I printed this in ABS with 40% gyroid infill. It's rigid enough that the fan doesn't sag. I didn't need any supports. I used blue Loctite thread locker on the fan screws to keep them secure in the heat inserts.
Final note: The Adaptec 71605 specifies 200 Linear Feet per Minute (LFM) of airflow across the heatsink. For the size of the heatsink, you'll need about 9.3 m^3/hr of airflow. A Noctua 40x40x20mm fan meets that requirement while being fairly quiet.
