I designed this tassel maker as part of my costume making for Halloween. I needed a small (5cm) tassel for a fez as part of an Abu (Aladdin) costume.

To use this:

  1. Lay a single or doubled length of yarn across the top. The hole in the tassel tool can be used to keep this tucked away while winding the rest of the tassel. This length of yarn will eventually be used to attach the tassel to the hat, or bookmark, or whatever you are using this with.
  2. Take a second, long piece of yarn and start wrapping the yarn around the tassel tool, top to bottom. 30 to 50 wraps should be good. More wraps mean a girthier tassel.
  3. Take a third length of yarn and form a bight or loop, laid on top of the wraps in preparation for later closing off the tassel using a Hangmans Knot.
  4. Wrap this third length of yarn around the wrappings, around 5 to 10 times, through the center of the tassel tool, then tuck the end of the yarn into the bight and tighten the other end to close the knot.
  5. Tie off the first piece of yarn, pulling it taught and knotting twice if needed.
  6. Finally, snip the threads along the bottom with scissors or a razor blade and slide the tassel off the tool.
