After seeing some of the surprise egg models out there, I thought it would be a very neat concept to have a breakable/crackable Holiday tree ball type ornament to use as packaging for small gifts.
A thin decorative “crack” extends around the ornament which is actually a very narrow gap. Hitting the sides of the ornament with moderate force should be enough to break the print relatively cleanly along the crack, splitting the two halves, and revealing the contents.
It's a unique and fun way to give something small or a gift card!
The bottom of the print has a threaded screw-in base so you don't have to insert the gift while printing and you can also use it to get the gift out if you don't want to break the print. The opening is 2 ¼-inches (60mm), large enough to fit gift cards through, candy, or other small gifts. The ball itself has a diameter of about 4 3/4-inches (120mm). Plenty of space to pack in goodies. If you have something that will not fit through the bottom, you can always pause and place the gift item mid-print.
The top has a closed loop that you can use to hang the gift box like any other ornament if you want to hide a gift in plain sight.
Uses around 80g of filament. You should not need infill or any supports if you use 3 walls with a 0.4mm nozzle or 2 walls with a 0.6mm nozzle. I printed the examples in the pictures with a coarse layer-height and fast on a CR-10S with 0.6mm nozzle, hence some noticeable artifacts. I printed a couple others with a 0.4mm nozzle and 0.2mm layer height and they were much cleaner, but took longer to print than I was willing to wait for something someone was just going to break anyway.
Happy Holidays and Happy Printing!
The author remixed this model.
Using the same idea and parameters of Bugman_140's Surprise Egg model, I used Fusion 360 to model a larger, rounder Christmas/Holiday Ornament with a thin “crack” embossed around the sphere. I also added a threaded twist-on/off bottom hatch to allow adding contents to the ornament after printing or removing contents without breaking it.
