I've had trouble with soldering some small PCBs, so I designed a PCB holder in FreeCAD with parts I had at hand.

To build one yourself, you’ll need the following hardware:

  • One 2020 aluminium extrusion profile with tapped ends
  • One 8mm OD, 24mm length spring
  • One M5x8 screw
  • One M5x30 hex head screw
  • Two M5 square nuts
  • One M5x50 hex head screw
  • Two screws, matching the threads in your 2020 profile

And the following 3D-printed parts:

  • Two PCB-solder-fren-pair_of_legs.stl
  • Two PCB-solder-fren-clamp_post.stl
  • One PCB-solder-fren-knob.stl
  • One PCB-solder-fren-clamp_head.stl

Notes

Depending on the tolerances of your 3D prints, the hole in the “clamp_post” might be a bit tight or loose. Here you have two options: 1.) If it is too tight, drill or file it bigger. 2.) Adjust the hole diameter in the FreeCAD file.

I’ve 3D-printed my parts in PETG. The M5x50 screw is supposed to be threaded directly into the plastic. With PETG, this works really well.

PS: FreeCAD source files and STEP files included!

PPS: Fren ;)
