The Model

A remix of Bruce's Mission Model Paint Holder to make it parametric up to sizes of 8 x 8 bottles of paint of a given diameter.  See the remix differences section for how the model differs from the original.

How to modify

Three Fusion 360 files are included:

  1.  Custom Paint Holder 8x8 Master https://a360.co/3QWGB3X
  2.  Custom 31-4 2 x 5 https://a360.co/47dx0uU
  3.  Custom 3 x 2 Different Hole Sizes https://a360.co/40tE6cm

To create the custom holder, I suggest the following steps:

  • Download and save the latest Custom Paint Holder 8x8 Master into Fusion 360.
  • Open the 8x8 Master file in F360 and then immediately save it under a new file name that lets you know what size the holder will be.  The Custom 31-4 2 x 5 example has a hole diameter of 31.4 and has 10 spots in a 2 x 5 arrangement.
  • Within the new file, select the “Change Parameter” option under the “Modify” menu.
  • Enter the appropriate values for the number of rows (num_x) and number of columns (num_y), the bottle diameter (bottle_d), and the base (base) dimension if necessary.
  • The model should adjust automatically.
  • Save the model.
  • Export the .stl, .obj, or .3mf file by right-clicking on the body element and selecting Save As Mesh.
  • Import the exported file into your slicer of choice.

Notes on usage:

  • Once you reduce the number of rows and columns, you can not revert back to 8x8.  The model will fail to cut all the appropriate holes.
  • You can change the model to have different hole diameters but it requires that you edit the Base Design Sketch at the beginning of the timeline.  See Custom 3 x 2 Different Hole Sizes for an example.

Printing

The sample stands were printed on a Prusa XL using Keene Village Performance PLA. While more expensive, the KV performance PLA has superior heat deformation properties, 144 C vs. 55 C for regular PLA.

They can be easily printed at your favorite print settings with your favorite material. The settings I used were:

- 0.6 mm nozzle
- 0.32mm quality
- supports everywhere
- brim of 10
- 25% infill

I printed mine with a different side flat on the bed and support everywhere.  Prusa's default support settings generated support that was very easily knocked out by hand except for the support inside the bases on the bottom of the design.  Those popped out easily by pushing the support material out with needle-nose pliers through the holes in the bottom of the model.

Differences of the remix compared to the original

A remix of Bruce's Mission Model Paint Holder to make it parametric up to sizes of 8 x 8 bottles of paint of a given diameter.  See the description on how to modify to smaller sizes.

The differences include:

  1. Parametric, up to 8 x 8 bottles of paint.
  2. Diameter of paint bottle can be adjusted.
  3. Dimension of the square “rectangle base area” for each bottle can be adjusted.
  4. Height of the stand can be adjusted.
  5. Other minor dimensions can be adjusted.

Minor tweaks include:

  1. rounded the edges except at the bottom.
  2. eliminated a set of top holes.

I kept the license the same as Bruce's (@Bruce).
