Update! There are now two new single material versions without the bats! One has the ribbed texture and the other is smooth-sided.
Hi there, spooky people!
I got this one done with just a few days to spare before Halloween! 🎃
I had a few requests for a larger, more secure take on a Halloween-style coffin box, and I like cogs and mechanical things, so here we are! It's a Halloween container that securely closes with a threaded handle, and it can optionally be printed as a multimaterial print, too! That said, I personally prefer the single material version, but the option is there if you want it!
This Mechanical Coffin Box bears some resemblance to the Mechanical Valentine from earlier this year, though it works slightly differently, since the mechanism is so close to the hinges, causing things to come in on a much more curvy trajectory. I always liked the combination of threaded closure and secondary cog, though, and couldn't pass up the chance to do something similar on this design!
Print Description
This is an articulated print, so make sure your first layer is nice and neat, and that there aren't any print issues like overextrusion or stringing that might bind moving parts together!
Multimaterial Files
The multimaterial files are intended for systems like Prusa MMU, Bambu AMS and Mosaic Palette that allow multiple filaments to be used at the same time - they are not intended for assembly after printing!
The easiest way to get a multimaterial effect on this print, though, is to just swap filaments after the first few layers.
Print Dimensions
The Mechanical Coffin Box occupies 140mm x 166mm on the print bed and is 30mm tall.
Supports Needed?
Not at all! Designed for straightforward printing!
Scalability
This one should scale up or down a bit without too much trouble, but eventually things are going to be too loose or tight! The screw closure should still keep things nicely closed, though.
Print Orientation
The Mechanical Coffin Box prints with the lid open.
Further Thoughts
I tried at 60% with a filament swap after three layers and it came out just fine! It constantly amazes me how precise our printers can be :)
Happy Almost-Halloween!
xoxo
Sven.
