Description

I created this model to satisfy the need of having a printable model of this device in internet, because in the moment i needed it, i could not find anyone that really looks useful and mature.

This is a modular model that you could print part by part. You will print all the needed parts and assemble it using M5 screws and nuts.

Up to this point its important to say that. I'm not a medic or any kind of specialist in this kind of devices, so use it with intelligence and at your own risk.

Why?

Some of you may be wondering why print and use this when you can buy one in amazon for a really reasonable price. The answer is freedom. Not al the countries have the internal market to sell this kind of devices, so maybe you can't buy one in your country for a reasonable price, and import this kind of devices at your country could be expensive in money, time and formalities.

So, if you need this and you can't do the formalities or pay the expensive money you need for one of these, I'm glad to help you to build your own.

Materials

The materials with depend of many variables. the PLA works pretty fine because it was designed to be thick and durable, anyways, its not the best material for this kind of device.

I recommend use ABS with a good infill pattern and more than 50%. The honeycomb pattern works really well at the moment of distribute load, but the printing time could increase a lot.

Apart from this, I strongly recommend to use ABS in the hinges, remember that that part will support all the load when you walk with it and flex your leg. If it possible, carbon fiber or nylon will be the best options for this specific parts.

In counterpart, the plates that fix our leg with the device must be soft and flexible.
This is not a must, but you will fill the difference. TPU works fine.

As a resume, how can I print this?

The best way is use ABS for the long supports, use carbon fiber, nylon or a good ABS too for the hinges and use TPU for the plates that fix your leg to the rest of the device.

Assemble

Apart from the pieces, you will need:

M5 x 20mm x20
M5 x 30mm x 20
2 pulley wheels from 3d printes
2 meters of Velcro aprox. Will depend of the size or your leg

You will need to print:

2 male supports and 2 female supports
2 male hinges and 2 female hinges
4 big supports plates for the upper part of the leg and 4 small ones for the lower part (this could change if you are more comfortable with one or another, the true is that the socket its the same for both, so you can choose what you want)

Step by step

1) Print all the needed pieces

2) Assemble the male a female hinges into the supports, you can put the nuts in their correct place and put the screws to fix this parts. Use 20mm screws here

3)Put the rod in the center hole of the female hinge, and assemble with the another part. Use the 20 mm screws to fix the center first and the other screw in the mark that correspond with you flex angle that you can do without injures. Test that everything is well fixed. Don't tight to much this ones, its just to center and stop the piece. If you tight to much the piece wont bend well.

4) Put the plates in the sockets, put the nuts and screw it with the 30mm screws

5) Now we need to put the velcro. Here its a lot of freedom. If you want you can use some kind of fabric or strap and sew up with the velcros, or just use the velcro as a strap to make the correct pressure. The grooves give you many options. I will show you how i did it with just the velcro and some glue
