Overview

The GoPro quick release buckle has been an important component of the GoPro mount system since time immemorial. Somewhere around the release of the GoPro Hero 5, GoPro introduced a new version of the quick release buckle that had an integrated locking and anti-vibration tab. This increases the security of your GoPro mount and is, in my opinion, a significant improvement over the original design.

While a large number of 3D printed quick releases can be found, this is, as far as know, the first printed GoPro quick release buckle to use this flexible locking tab. It is printed in two pieces: one in a tough plastic of your choice (Nylon, PETG, ABS), the other in flexible filament (TPU). These two components are then fitted together and the result can be used to replace the original GoPro mounting buckle (closest I can find to the OEM part listing is this set) in all your favorite GoPro quick release mounts.

One obvious disclaimer: a 3D printed mount will not be as strong as an injection molded design. That being said, it's plenty strong for day-to-day use. I haven't had issues with durability in my activities, and unless you're doing extreme sports and smashing the camera around you shouldn't either. Print with extra perimeters for additional strength.

Hardware

You need one M5 nut for the GoPro thumbscrew to screw into.

Printing

The main buckle component is fairly self-explanatory. No support or postprocessing is required.

The flexible insert is a little more complicated. The TPU you choose doesn't need to be super soft; I used shore 95A Overture TPU and it worked great. I recommend printing with the large flat face down on the bed and with support on build plate only to support the overhanging arms (see picture). Supports can be challenging to remove on TPU. However, the contact area is quite small and if you increase the Top contact Z distance to 0.3mm, you can even pull the supports off by hand; no cutting or snipping required. (If you still have trouble, a pair of flush cutters or a razor blade will do the job just fine as well.)

Assembly

  1. Insert the flex insert downward into the main buckle piece at a 45 degree angle
  2. Bend the flex insert down until it rests in the locking position. The two overhanging arms should bend and stick out below the main buckle component at an angle.
  3. One at a time, grab the protruding arm and pull/lift it over and into the rectangular cutout in the main component. Press firmly into place. Glue if desired.
  4. Insert M5 nut into the hex cutout. This should also be a secure press fit. Glue if desired.
  5. Your quick release buckle is ready for use! Lift the locking tab by pushing up firmly on the back edge of the flexible locking tab. After inserting the buckle into a GoPro quick release mount, firmly press the locking tab back down into place.
  6. Enjoy your GoPro-worthy activities!
