General

I was unable to find a refillable activated carbon air filter (box) for Bambu Lab X1 / X1C / P1P so I rolled up my sleeves and designed my own version.

Features

  • Allows to save a decent amount of money using this instead of the original activated carbon air filter. Just replace carbon pallets and go.
  • Designed for easy use and fast to print.
  • No supports required.

The filter box size is 82mm x 48mm x 29mm. Please check against your existing filter.

Recommended print settings

  • Extrusion width: 0.4mm, forced
  • Layer height: 0.2mm
  • Walls: 4
  • Infill percentage: Any (will print as walls only)
  • Solid top/bottom layers: 4
  • Supports: None.

Very important stuff (this is not a joke)!

Use a decent heat-resistant filament.

Please Print in ASA, ASA-CF, ABS or at least PETG.

Source propper acid-ree carbon pellets.

VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are common in daily life but VOCs generated from 3D printing are known to cause severe health issues and even cause cancer in some cases.

The optimal carbon pellets for 3D printer's VOCs absorption are sourced from virgin coconut, not wood/bitumen/charcoal or other materials. The porosity for each and every source will vary greatly.

3D Printer VOCs are generally less than 0.5 nm, meaning that for optimal capture rate and efficiency, you need carbon with a high microporosity ratio, defined as <1nm. A higher iodine count >1000 usually indicates at least some micro/mesoporosity, and a higher hardness (>95%) will create less dust in air filtration.

Avoid acid-washed carbon at all costs.

Residues have oxidized printers! Go for steam activated, non-acid-washed. A blend of neutral carbon and alkaline KOH carbon might be the best blend in the future, but impossible to currently source from trustworthy manufacturers.

Finding carbon that fills all criteria is hard. My recommendation is to use Nevermore premium carbon commonly used in Voron, Annex, and other DYI 3D printing communities.

It doesn't come cheap compared to bulk carbon from Amazon, but it's safe and has an unbeatable performance.
