Update June 18 2023: I moved the lanyard lugs to the sides, which should make the bird call dangle better when worn as a necklace.

This is a set of whistles tuned to the first five notes of a G or F Major scale. It is designed for use as Papageno's bird call in Mozart's opera “The Magic Flute” or “Die Zauberflöte.” The original opera arias are in G, but I created the version in F because G was a little high for my voice. The notes are tuned to G6-D7 or F6-C7 with modern A-440 tuning. I've included loops to attach a lanyard to hang this as a necklace (as is often done in performances of the opera).

(Note: in the video above I'm playing a prototype version. The final version has the same tone quality but improved tuning.)

Printing

I recommend printing with the forward side wall of the long pipe on the build plate. It means the labium (the wedge that produces the sound) will be faced slightly downward but won't require supports, so it will have a nice clean surface for a clear tone. Supports will still be required for other areas, and I recommend organic supports for those. You will probably need to block supports inside the bore to prevent the organic supports from snaking their way in there. I recommend applying support blockers with the painted support tool in triangle mode. The provided 3mf file is already set up this way for Prusa Slicer 2.6.

This instrument can be printed in any rigid material that has good bridging characteristics. Note that if the material you use shrinks after printing (for example ASA or ABS), you may need to scale your print up to compensate in order to preserve the tuning. If anyone prints this for an actual performance of The Magic Flute or even just one of Papageno's arias, please let me know! I would love to see it in action in the setting it's designed for.
