Description

PDF

This is my own custom design for a basic low-profile, columnar staggered 40-key ergonomic keyboard that I call Torch0 because counting always starts at 0 and this is my first keyb design.

More details on the project GitHub: https://github.com/terryorchard/keyb/tree/main/torch0
→ It requires a ProMicro MCU (I use Elite-Pi), 40 × Kailh choc low-profile switches, keycaps, 40 × 1N4148 Diodes, optionally a EC11 encoder (requires an extra diode), plus your preference of wire, heatshrink, and tools.

Versions

V1: The print itself is very straightforward, no supports, and broken apart to fit on an Ender 3. The wiring is up to your preferences as there's no PCB for this layout. If you want to learn more or get some inspiration check out https://www.reddit.com/r/HandwiredKeyboards/

V2: This is essentially the same as V1, but with a more refined area for the MCU that's designed to be used with 2×12 mill-max socket strips that I superglue in, and an actual hole for an EC11 encoder so you don't have to drill it. I have not printed this model but I am very confident it would work just fine.
I recommend printing upside down with tree supports just touching the build plate for the MCU area and radical wizard cat.

V3: This final version builds of V2 but also has a 10° tent on each half. Definitely requires support regardless of orientation. I would recommend printing top-down, with that 10° tilt so the top surface is flat to the print bed, with tree supports everywhere for the middle connection area. Admittedly I haven't printed this either but the dimensions are solid and every part has been “unit-tested” just not the whole case / switch plate.

Also

fi also uploaded a DXF drawing file of the bottom plate that I had made as a 3mm thick piece of laser cut acrylic.

Feel free to make or modify, just drop my name and a link to this page / the project GitHub and don't make money off of it.

This is the first of many custom keyboards but it's a great starting point!
