This is an indicator holder for use on a lathe with and AXA toolpost. As the title indicates, this is one of several versions so pick the one you like - or make your own improved version!

Similar holders have been made by others before, but I was not able to find an existing 3D print for two indicators so I made my own.

The two indicators I used for it are typically advertised as:

2pc SMALL FACE 1.5" RANGE 0-0.25 DIAL INDICATORS 0.001"

(about two for US$35 when I bought them around March 2020).

As the name indicates, this works with two indicators with the idea that, depending on which face of the tool-post you use you will have an indicator in the correct position for either the side or the face of your work-piece.

This version is pretty straightforward; it's main disadvantage is that in the side indication position there is not a lot of clearance so there is no room for large diameter work-pieces.

Note that the holder does not have a height-setting stop - really not needed for this application.

The OnShape 3D CAD file for this is here :

Print instructions

Print in PLA using the 3mf file provided; otherwise :

  • perimeters = 4
  • infill 25% rectilinear

These settings might be a bit of overkill, but I wanted to leave "meat" for threading, as well as some solidity overall.

The mounting holes for the indicators needed to be tapped for threads after printing (1/4"- 20 or M6x1). I used 1/2" (13mm) long truss head screws (kind of a round head screw with a very wide head).
