This is a back massage roller designed to be entirely 3D printed. No additional hardware required!

UPDATE: 15th Feb 23 - It's a win! :)  Also added a slightly improved wheel print that should spin easier.

There are a -lot- of components to this print, but they are all individually easy prints and mostly multiples of the same parts; no supports needed, no funny details or overhangs, no brims*, and big flat faces to put on the print bed. There should be no clean-up required after print bed removal either (unless you have any print defects).

*Being 100% honest, I printed my handle part with a brim. I’m sure it should be printable without though; you know your own printer’s capabilities.

I’ve included 3 different handle designs, you can pick and choose from:

  • Single part, plain
  • Single part, hearts embossed pattern
  • Multi-part, where the hearts require gluing in. (The only instance where you need something other than a 3D printer! This also has some overhangs, and may need some supports. This design is untested.)

There is a very specific order you need to assemble this in, and you must start with the Handle Arm part. Place the corresponding parts across the pivot point, and secure in place with a pair of lock rings. The lock rings are very tight, (top-tip - the hex scraper https://www.printables.com/model/122894-hexscraper-printbed-scraper also doubles as a very helpful assembly tool!)

The wheels or the handle are the last components added. Disassembly is difficult, but not impossible**, so don’t be tempted to rush it and assemble parts as they finish printing.

**Finally, the square pin is VERY tight! I doubt you will get the handle and arm apart again without damaging them, so make sure you are happy with everything else before fitting.

Notes on printing

  • I printed the black parts in PETG (Prusament galaxy black) and the red parts in PLA (Amazon basics)
  • The wheels are an excellent candidate to try out variable layer height. You can get a really nice smooth rounded outer/top face.
  • When printing the handle, paint the seam along the underside for a nice clean finish.
  • UPDATE: I've uploaded a new wheel model that has a small valley on the internal hole. This should automatically align and recess the seam to prevent it from sticking or catching during rotation.

Full list of parts required:

  • 1x handle (design of your preference)
  • 2x handle pins (note two tiny lugs on one face - make sure you print the right face up or you’ll get spaghetti!)
  • 2x handle arms
  • 4x first arms
  • 8x mid arms
  • 16x wheel axis
  • 16x wheels
  • 16x caps
  • 28x lock rings

Happy Valentines!
