This is a remix of the base for the Desktop Neon Sign by DIY Machines that simplifies the electronics components and allows the use of a simple circular toggle switch and a USB powered neon LED light strip. This remix will work with any of the tops designed by the DIY Machines.
Parts
Assembly
- Cut the factory power wire in half about 6 inches from the LED strip. Strip back about 1 ½ inches of the outer cover then strip about ½ inch from each wire on both ends of the power wire.
- Follow the instructions provided by DIY Machines for assembly and wiring of the light strips and the top of your choosing.
- Connect the the top, dome and base using the instructions provided by DIY Machines.
- Insert the switch into the opening in the front of the base.
- Connect all of the negative wires together using a crimp connector or equivalent and then connect all of the positive wires from the LED strip(s) to one side of the switch. Then connect the incoming (from the USB side) positive wire to the other side of the switch.
- If you only have a single LED strip in the lamp, you can reconnect the negative wires using a crimp connector or equivalent and then connect the LED positive and incoming positive wire to separate terminals in the switch.
- See the wiring diagram provided (and sulk in my awesome MS Paint skills)
- Place a zip tie around the main incoming power wire. Snip the free end of the zip tie. Alternatively, you could tie a simple overhand knot in the wire.
- Plug in the USB power cord and test to make sure everything is working properly. If not, check your connections and try again.
- Tidy the wiring inside the base and run the incoming power wire through the slot on the back side of the base. Ensure the zip tie is inside the base (this helps to keep the wire from pulling out) and glue on the bottom cover.
Notes
- The switch opening is 20 mm
- This project page is a work in progress with more pictures to come
- Printing the base with supports will yield a better print above the cutout where the switch goes
