In search of a solution for storing small box board games I ended up with some of these wine racks hoping I could mod them https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/kallax-insert-for-bottles-white-80401292/.
And it turned out I could mod them pretty well! By only using one vertical insert, you end up with 6 slots, half being wider and IMO more useful with the other half being the standard wine rack size which works for the very small boxes. The only issue is sturdiness. One option would be to nail the shelves, and of course thats going to be the most secure. But I didn't really want to do anything permanent, as I might want to move them around, remove, or sell later.
So instead I made some simple brackets to support them that just slip on the back of the shelves. The “connector” brackets are the more important bracket, they go in between two wine racks and connect to the kallax itself. The “mini” brackets go on the wine rack itself for some additional support.
In the picture I showed with a row of 4 for maximum sturdiness this means you would want:
6x connector brackets
8x mini brackets
However, personally I don't think the inner two need mini brackets since they have connectors on both ends and up sturdy from those alone. So I went with:
6x connector brackets
4x mini brackets
Print as is with bridging enabled, supports not necessary. I added options with and without extra wedge supports which might be tricky for bridging on some printers, but I recommend them for a bit more sturdiness. To be honest my bridging wasn't perfect on the wedge supports either but it doesn't affect the functionality.
I'm very happy with this and think it looks great! It would also look pretty cool connecting 4 in a cube but you'll lose some sturdiness that way and need more brackets.
As a final bonus, buying 3 inserts effectively gives you a 4th free since you're saving a shelf on each! I originally only wanted two but figured I might as well buy a third and have four total inserts.
