This is an HDD tray for a Fractal Define 7 XL (and other models) with an optional SAS protector.

The tray is a drop-in replacement or alternative to the original “FD-A-TRAY-001” tray from Fractal Design. Or also called “HDD Tray Kit - Type B.”

During Covid, the availability of those accessories was scarce and always out of stock or hugely overpriced. And because several other people and I needed a few of them to max out all the slots in the case, I designed, printed, and improved those trays myself and sold them on eBay. So now, here are the files if you want to print them yourself.

There is a thick 2.5mm and thin 2mm variant. I mostly printed with PLA, which is stiffer, and thus only needed the 2mm. If you’re printing with PETG, which is more flexible, I recommend 2.5mm. In most cases, thin 2.0 with PLA is more than enough.

The SAS Protector is optional for those that use SFF-8482 SAS Cables in combination with an HBA or Raid card. For SATA, this is not needed.

What you will need per tray:

If you also want to add the SAS protector, you will need the following:

  • the 3D-printed SAS protector
  • 2x M3x8 screws (I used DIN 912 screws)
  • 2x square M3 nuts (standard low shape)

My settings:

  • printed on a Prusa i3 MK3s
  • 0.4mm nozzle - 0.2mm layer height - 100% Infill
  • with support, but only “the tray bottom”. Exclude higher front and back hole support.
  • with Das Filament PLA, Prusament PLA, Fillamentum PLA or whatever you prefer ^^

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

Those trays originally started from Jens Vancraybex’s design you can find here. From there, I hugely modified/redesigned it to reduce material, add a SAS mount and change tolerances to make it more versatile. I still want to give attribution to his work.
