I designed this comb because I could not find a similar one in Sally's Beauty Supply store the last time I checked. Apparently, that was a while ago because I checked the internet before posting the model and there are a few places from which to buy this comb. Would I have bothered with designing a model if I had checked the internet first? Probably not, but since I have gone through the trouble, I am glad I didn't check the internet first. Why? I had two issues with the design of the comb.
The first Issue is that one of the picks broke off shortly after I began using the comb. I have used it in that condition for years. I don't have to do that anymore. Not only can I print another one myself, but I can work on improving the design so that it stops happening.
The second issue is the balls at the end of the comb tips. The balls look to be spots where the teeth tips were dipped into a different colored plastic. These balls would sometimes snag my hair as the amount of material is too much in some spots, creating crevices.
The tips of the teeth in my design are rounded horizontally. There is the option of rounding the area above the tip. I may try this with future models if no one else does.
One disadvantage to printing this comb is the inability to print the tips at midheight without visible elevated steps due to level changes. I suppose the comb could be printed vertically. I did not attempt it because I was sure it would fail. That is something I feel would be an easy job for a resin printer. A model with midheight tips is included in the download.
The first print of this model was made with Algix Dura PLA based Nylon Analog. I tied to clean up some fine stringing with a heat gun, but got too close and ruined the comb. The next print was made using Ziro translucent filament. I cleaned up the fine stringing by spraying the print with hot water and clipping the remaining residue. The entire print received a coat of varnish.
