This is a lamp cover, made entirely from 3d printed parts, that can hold four lithophane panes. The images can be easily swapped in and out of the lamp in a few seconds. The lamp cover has threads that can screw into the base of the lamp.

I made two options for the top cover. One has an opening to insert a lens that let's light through the top. The other is solid to let the light only escape through the lithophanes.

Here is the lamp I used. The price fluctuates between $19-$25 from what I have seen. The lightbulb it comes with gives off more heat than I would like, so I am investigating alternate types.

I used this generator to make the lithophanes. They need to be 85mm by 85mm by 7.5mm in order to fit.

Print Instructions:

The 3d printed parts are all easy to make. Here are some suggestions:

  • Make sure that the bridging angle for the lamp_base part is adjusted to bridge across the gaps diagonally.
  • Print the lithophanes at 0.1mm layer heights with a 0.4mm nozzle for decent results. The other parts turned out great with a 0.6mm nozzle.
  • Print the lens out before the lamp top cover. I printed the top lens using clear filament to let a large amount of light get through. Set a layer swap to pause the lamp top print so the lense can be inserted inside.

Assembly:

I used some puzzle-box-like design tricks to make all of the parts fit together securely without the help of any glue or  metal fasteners.

The assembly process is very simple. Make sure to remove any protruding edges on the bottom of the lithophanes that would prevent fit-up with the base. Check out this quick video I made showing how everything fits together:
