1.75 mm Filament Lock with Integrated Cleaner

A comment on my original Filament Lock design asked whether it would be possible to integrate a filament cleaner.

This filament lock with integrated cleaner is based on the previous filament lock design which is designed to prevent unspooling and tangles.

This new design still meets my original requirements:

  • No clipping to the spool rim ✔
  • A flag that identifies the loose filament end ✔
  • Prevention of loose filament tucking under another filament loop ✔
  • No need to remove the clip when using the spool ✔
  • Work with any spool ✔
  • Easy to print ✔
  • No assembly ✔ (Except for inserting the sponge)
  • Easy to use ✔

Now with this added benefit:

*Never forget to install the cleaner when loading filament

Print Settings

Printer:

HyperCube Evolution

Rafts:

No

Resolution:

.2

Infill:

40%

Filament: 3D Solutech PLA Whatever color you like.

Notes:

The 40% fill is to give the small area protrusions some additional strength.

There is also an stl and image of a representation of the sponge for the cleaner. This can be used to estimate the size and preparation of the sponge. Although, since it is a sponge, shape doesn't matter as much as size.

Post-Printing

Tuck a piece of sponge into the cleaner and snap on the cap to complete the cleaner.

I found cutting the sponge into two layers makes filament insertion easier.

  • lay in the bottom piece of sponge
  • thread filament
  • lay in the top piece of sponge
  • snap on the lid

How to Use

Rendering of filament locked into clip

To store filament

  1. Insert the filament through the guide
  2. Wrap loose end of filament around the spool once or twice
  3. Insert end of filament into the "S" lock
  4. Slide the filament lock to tighten the filament onto the spool

To print with filament

  1. Pull filament out of the "S" lock
  2. The Cleaner/Lock can be left on the spool with filament threaded through the guide and cleaner.

The guide inside diameter is large enough to allow the filament to pull easily through the lock. The cleaner will remove dust and optionally oil the filament. Leaving the filament lock threaded on the spool prevents tangles occurring during filament unloading from the printer. 3. Load filament to printer
