This is a spray shield that snaps on a M12 safety overpressure valve as found on the Gaggia TS Espresso coffee machine.
The valve starts normally open and closes when enough pressure is reached, usually spraying everywhere. This shield blocks most of the spray, which flows straight downward.
A part which is prone to failure in this machine is the transformer, placed inside the shielded enclosure on the top section of the machine. The high temperature and constant heat cycling in the enclosure caused this part to fail once a year despite the HT rating of the part until we moved the electronics to a lower section and creating some passive/downfacing vent holes.
Although unlikely, we decided to also reduce the spraying that went towards the enclosure using this shield. Never had a failure since.
