I wanted to do something more advanced for my designs and I wanted it to be print in place (PIP). I decided to do a cable winder so I could organize all my loose cables and make it easier to travel with them. I was able to make the only assembly be inserting a few small pieces of filament! Here is a features list:
This holds a 4 ft cable and is only 26mm high (≈1in). The cable stays inside the winder and can't be pulled out either end. There is no hardware required and all the parts are printed in one assembly so besides the filament, the entire winder is actually one piece!
The rotators use a similar concept to my ULTIFIDGET design to hold themselves in place :-)
I took ideas from many of the genius cable winders already on Printables. I used no dimensions from any of them and never printed any successful parts of their designs so this is NOT a remix of anyone's design.
Instructions:
FIRST! Make sure your cable is compatible! I have tested 4ft ≈3mm OD cables. If you use too chunky of a cable it will deform and this winder could break it!
Print this at .2mm layer height with any infill. After the model is finished make sure that all of the joints move freely.
PRO TIP: Wrap some duct tape around the middle of the cable to make it stronger and to keep it in place!
Insert the cable and the three sections of filament. Make sure each tip of the filament is sharp. Also confirm that the cable is in all of the grooves.
Finally you can fold the winder and wind the cable using the folding handles. If there is any excess on either side than you can simply push it back in.
Great Job! You have successfully assembled the cable winder! If you like this model then please leave a make!
If you like this design then maybe you would like to check out my other designs :-)
