A remix of the original Puzzle of Evil, which should address some problems I had with the original design :

  • Reworked hinge : I had a hard time printing a fully-fonctionnal hinge with the original design. I had to tweak some options in my slicer (Cura) to make it move without breaking everything. So I just tried another approach, and came up with 2 different hinges : nut & bolt hinge (with the help of NUT JOB) and magnetic hinge
  • Separated parts : new hinges make now possible to print each side separately, which can prevent wasting too much material upon failures and add the possibility to print each side with different colors
  • Removed texts : “EASY” and “HARD” labels generated some artifacts around their edges, and prevented me from properly placing a bigger hole for closing magnets. So I decided to get rid of them, and replaced them with some icons to insert on each puzzle space. This also give the opportunity to print them in different colors, which bring a bit more depth to the object
  • Deeper puzzle space : with the original design, I couldn't find a way to close the clamshell entirely (without any gap), there was always a little gap between both sides. So I just lowered the puzzle space on each side while keeping the original pieces dimensions
  • Side holes : I just added some holes to the side of each part to help opening the clamshell with thumbs

Assembly instructions

  • You can print each part in any color you want
  • Magnet holes intended for 6mm x 3mm magnets
  • For any version, print these files :
    • “heart”
    • “skull”
    • “piece_A”
    • “piece_B”
    • “piece_C”
    • “piece_D”
  • If printing the nut & bolt hinge version :
    • Print these files :
      • “nut_bolt_easy_part”
      • “nut_bolt_hard_part”
      • “nut”
      • “bolt”
    • Align “nut_bolt_easy_part” and “nut_bolt_hard_part” properly
    • Put “evil_bolt” all along the aligned parts
    • Screw the “evil_nut” to the “evil_bolt” tip
  • If printing the magnetic hinge version :
    • Print these files :
      • “magnetic_easy_part”
      • “magnetic_hard_part”
    • Put a magnet into each hinge hole (pay attention to the polarity of the magnets, they should attract themselves on each hinge junction), glue them if they don't stay in place
    • Just magnetically-clip the two parts
  • Finally, put a magnet on each side hole, glue them if needed
  • And you're done :)

Printing instructions

I printed everything with a 0.2mm layer height, 15% infill, different colors/textures PLA, without supports.

Additional informations

I made the overall design with Tinkercad, feel free to get and remix it from here. The nut & bolt were customized with OpenSCAD.
