Introducing the Over-The-Top 608 Bearing Box which utilizes 608 bearings for it's hinge mechanism! A handy dandy little storage box for the connoisseur of mechanical components. The OTT 608 Bearing Box holds 20 bearings.
I was inspired by rhiannonl's 608 box to make something a little less practical, a little more wasteful, and a little more fun. You can find rhiannonl's box here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4805853
You'll need:
3x 5x3mm Neodymium Magnets
2x M3 Bolts 20mm
2x M3 Nuts
2x M3 Washers (OPTIONAL, probably)
2x 608 Bearings
Everything will print without supports, though you may need to sand the inside of the rings where the bearings insert into the lid if your bridges aren't perfect. If you print both parts at the same time the height of the magnet holes is the same so you can get away with a single pause, just don't be stupid like me and get your polarity wrong! That's why you can see half the magnets in my photos, I had to drill them out and put them the right way around.. Woops!
Assembly is simple, just insert the hinge pins into the 608's (pliers or vice grips likely necessary), then the 608's into the lid, then drop an M3 nut into one of the slots on the base, line the two halves up and thread your screw through, then repeat for the other side.
The box shuts closed in a very satisfying way, and the 608's will stay in place inside no matter how much you jostle it. The fit for the bearings inside the box is loose and not snug, so they will rattle around in their little homes. Oh and there's a handy little protrusion on the front of the base making single handed operation of this box a breeze.
Any problems let me know.
Enjoy!
