You can spend more money on specialized tools to stretch canvas onto a frame, or you can re-purpose readily available (and locking, which is better) sheet metal pliers. The issue with sheet metal pliers is they can have sharp edges, a steep angle-of-attack, and will likely rip or damage the canvas.
This is solved with TPU jaws designed to both cover the sharp edges, and provide a much larger contact area for gripping the canvas at the 'nearly-closed' position, plus TPU is good for gripping anyway.
Note, top and bottom jaws look similar in preview, but the slots on the back side are different sizes.
