You can spend more money on specialized tools to stretch canvas onto a frame, or you can re-purpose readily available (and locking, which is better) sheet metal pliers. The issue with sheet metal pliers is they can have sharp edges, a steep angle-of-attack, and will likely rip or damage the canvas.

This is solved with TPU jaws designed to both cover the sharp edges, and provide a much larger contact area for gripping the canvas at the 'nearly-closed' position, plus TPU is good for gripping anyway.

Note, top and bottom jaws look similar in preview, but the slots on the back side are different sizes.

Pliers they fit are IRWIN Vise-Grip Sheet Metal 8" https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000TFGFU
