My wife has several yarn project containers - none of them really solve all situations. She showed me one she bought that has a screw on lid that flips open but only has a central hole, so once you start a project, it remains in the jar until complete. It also only holds one small skein.
I saw this big jug of pretzels and realized I could solve the size and hole problems. I threw out the original lid and designed a replacement.
The jug is threaded, but I had to figure out the thread size. I measured and counted revolutions and found the answer with a little trial and error. The solution was Fusion 360's "coil". I added a hinged lid (using filament) with a central hole and a cutout area. The idea was to put the skein in the jug and run the yarn up through the hole - like a yarn bowl. But the added cutout would allow a project in work (with needles) to be poked back into the jug also. Sometimes my wife just ignores the central hole and only uses the cutout.
She sewed a cover for it - complete with a strap and drawstring.
The jug is about 12" deep, 8" diameter, and opening about 4.5". It will hold up to an 8oz skein (or multiple smaller ones). The cutout will accept up to size 17 needles.
It prints with no support. I used ABS for the strength, but PLA should work just fine.
A note on the filament hinge: she has used this caddy almost every day for almost 4 years - the filament in the hinge broke after about 3 years. It took me about 2 minutes to replace it.
