This spool axle takes 52mm diameter spools and uses two standard 608ZZ ball bearings. Feel free to use those higher-friction cheap ones, they are actually better suited because they'll act as a gentle brake. It comes with spring- (or rubber band) -loaded movable clips to secure the filament spool against sideways slippage.
One clip per tube should suffice, but two or three offer some redundancy.
To attach the clips, use a small rubber band through the clip's hole and over one spoke on the other end of the tube, then press in the bearings to prevent the bands from slipping off.
To insert/remove a filament spool: pull out the clips until they can be swiveled by 90 degrees so they both fit through the spool's inner hole.

Notes:
Tried a raft for the clips, but had some disagreement with Slic3r over the actual print speed for the first layer after the raft – I thought it'd be 50% of nominal for better adhesion, but it ended up full speed anyway. So the clips in the pictures do have a rather messed-up first layer. Still operational, but I most likely could've foregone the raft.
