I needed a drain-strainer for a 57mm drain hole that would not clog in a laundry trough that can experience large water inflows - with fluff that blocks standard drain-strainers.

Not sure of the profile of the strainer that would yield best results - I wrote a small Rhino/Grasshopper model that takes an arbitary revolution profile and uniformly pierces it.

The result performs very well - and there is now a computational geometry model that can create uniformly spaced perforations in an arbitrary revolved solid, which is useful of itself...

Instructions

The downloadable files include:

  • printable STL
  • Rhino3D model
  • Grasshopper computational geometry model for production of a uniformly perforated revolved solid from an abritrary profile
  • STEP model (no parametric capability)

The model files will allow you to scale this for any sized plug hole. If you use Rhino3D, you will find the Grasshopper file very useful for generating uniformly spaced perforations in any revolved solid. All the parameters to adjust spacings, wall widths and piercing scales are in the GH model. You could substitute any arbitrary closed curve for the circle I used to create very complex piercings if you like!
