Finally there is a Home Assistant that does not rely on the likes of Google or Amazon to help automate your lifestyle. In 2021, the Mark II edition of the Mycroft AI project was released, which includes all the electronics to build your own Home Assistant. As of this writing, they're still working out an official enclosure and final software parts but it's fun to print your own enclosure and do things your way.

So this is my take on a custom enclosure for the Mark II. Nestled inside, the Mycroft audio board is joined by a touch screen, a Raspberry Pi 4B, two hefty speakers, and a cooling fan. The electronics components fit together and have reasonable snap-fit support without any screws or glues necessary, and can be dis-assembled easily if you decide to make modifications or choose a new case when they finish the official one.

Since the Mycroft software does not currently support inverting the screen, you will need to add a 40-pin extension cord between the Mycroft audio board and the Raspberry Pi GPIO. There is enough room in the case to fit such an extension ribbon cable and its necessary twist. I used this GPIO extension cable found on Adafruit, which only required a small amount of hobby knife modification to fit on the connector.
