Chunky square handguards, externally fluted to complete the distinctive Colt™ LMG look. Internally ribbed for extra strength. Each is made of two dovetail-jointed, pinned halves. Models are provided for rifle-length and mid-length gas systems.
These handguards are meant for mounting on an M16-style front sight. This makes them compatible with many AR15-based rifles and carbines, but not with those which have a carbine-length gas system or a handguard-mounted sight.
Directions
- Print the test model to verify the fit of the dovetail joints. Adjust XY size compensation (aka “horizontal expansion”) as needed.
- Print the two halves of the right handguard, and also their mirror images to produce a left handguard. Do it in a high-temperature material, with 100% infill. If your machine can print the right and left handguards in one piece each, then go for it and skip ahead to step 7.
- Cut four 280mm pieces of 2mm rod for rifle-length, or 204mm pieces for mid-length.
- Clean up the holes with a 3/32" drill bit, if necessary, to ensure that the rods will fit.
- Join each front half to the corresponding rear half at the dovetail joint.
- Apply glue inside the two holes at the rear of each handguard.
- Insert the rods all the way into the holes.
- Consider lining the inside of each handguard with a heatshield such as basalt tape, sheet aluminum, or whatever the kids are using these days.
- Mount the handguards on your rifle in the standard manner.
