I created these crodlu models for my Dark Sun game. They are large dinosaur like mounts.

Update: I have changed the CC license of my models because of the lack of clarity around AI use. If you want to re-mix, reuse, rewhatever my model, just ask..

I created these crodlu models in blender for my Dark Sun game. I wanted to share them here for others to enjoy.

About the Crodlu:

"A crodlu is a large reptilian animal used for transportation or as a beast of burden.
It resembles an enormous scaled ostrich whose limbs are tipped with wicked claws."

Crodlu are large animals. Described as being 10 feet tall in some sources and even larger in some of the old art. Often the backs of the crodlu are the full height of a person. I imagine trained riding crodlu can be trained to squat down for easier mounting. Regardless, I often see people portray them as medium animals, more like Chocobo so I wanted to make my own models for our game.

I based most of my details on the second edition art.

Even though crodlu cannot carry as much as a normal mount (typically they can carry half that of a normal mount), they are still large creatures. As such they are designed for a 48mm base.

Model Options:

There are four crodlu variant models:

  • Main model: The main model has three variations looking right, center, and left. The pose is a relaxed alert neutral stance. I consider these three variants the main model. I printed a few of each so they would look more interesting on the table.
  • Derpy: Based on a joke in our game… there is also Derpy. Derpy was born out of a quick sharpie drawing I did so that the players could place inventory on the ‘crodlu’ sheets to indicate what was on which mount… you know.. in case of one getting eaten… Derpy is based on an earlier design so he looks a bit different than the others. That's ok. We still love him.

There are three basing options:

  • No Base: Feel free to print these and base them as you see fit.
  • Slotted Base: This is my favorite option. The crodlu have a 2mm slotted base. The base file is also available and it has a 2.25mm slot. This means the bar fits snug but no so snug that you risk breaking the mini when removing it from the base. It also lets you print the bases in a separate color (such as black).
  • On Base: I added this for folks who want it. The bases are hollow underneath to save on filament. Support will be needed under the base. I don't like printing on bases because they are a pain to paint and if your print fails you are out the extra time it took to print the base.

Enjoy!
