I was not satisfied with any of the existing options for counterweights (too obtrusive, inconvenient or unreliable to install), so I made a new system for my VR set. This one sits closer to the headstrap, making it less obtrusive. It uses 5 eurocent coins so you can customize the weight; the entire assembly can hold 52 coins, which together with the print weighs about 230 grams.

I used a sandwich design for the mounting clips, assembled with screws. This provides a very secure mount on the headband. Additionally it provides a useful attachment point for cable guides, like the one included in the files. The cable guide needs to be printed in a flexible filament (there is no way to insert the cable if you can't flex it).

I included the Fusion 360 file in case you would like to customize anything.

Printing instructions:

No specific instructions, it is not a difficult print. Default 2 perimeters and 20% infill will work fine. You will likely have to print the cups with supports, as a sagging top layer means you can't fit as many coins in it.

Hardware required:

  • 4 x M3 screws >12mm long
  • 4 x M3 nuts.
  • You will need one M3 screw at least 18mm long if you want to install the cable guide
