I got some feedback on my Parametric Tripod Mod for a Flashlight pointing out that the head of the threaded insert doesn't have any ¼"-20 threading where the allen wrench fits in.  As a result,  some tripod mounts may not thread into the insert properly.

I solved this by inverting the ¼"-20 threaded insert.  In this model,  it inserts from the top of the model and screws down to sit flush with the bottom of the model.  The ¼"-20 threading goes all way to the bottom of the insert, which means it engages the tripod's threads much sooner.

After printing, I used a ¼"-20 threaded insert to mount atop one of my tripods.  At most angles, my small focusable LED flashlight fits well and a rubber band holds it snugly upside down.

The base of flashlight I'm using measures about 70mm long with a diameter of 27mm.   The included STL file (Flashlight Tripod Mount -- Inverted Insert -- 27mm x 70mm.stl) was generated using these values.

If your flashlight isn't that size,  install a copy of OpenSCAD and make changes to these  two variables to match your flashlight:

  • flashlight_height:  The measurement (in mm) from the base of the bulb to the end of the flashlight.
  • flashlight_diameter: The measurement (in mm) of the flashlight handle's diameter.
