Okay, so the box I made for wrangling all the little packets and spice bags in our kitchen cupboards ended up being a bit flimsy for the job. But rather than abandon it, I thought I'd try making some reinforcements and send this soldier back to the front lines.

In this particular case, I'm happy to just glue the brackets on, but I can imagine other cases where I might want to use actual screws, so I've made glue-on and screw-on versions. And obviously, I needed to reinforce both the 3-face corners on the bottom, and the 2-face corners on top.

So rather than create 4 different designs, I used OpenSCAD and just created 1 design with a bunch of options. You can set parameters at the top of the design file to control:

  • overall bracket width
  • bracket wall thickness
  • width of the bracket "shanks"
  • screw hole radius (0 to suppress screw holes)
  • optional screw hole bevel for countersinking
  • box wall thickness (only needed for 2-face brackets)

I don't know yet if this version of the box is as strong as it needs to be, but I do know that it's stronger than it was, so that counts as a win, right? :-)

Edit: If you slide the box onto a shelf, the corners can get ripped off when they strike the edge, so I've added side rails to keep this from happening. You'll have to scale the length to fit the gap between corner brackets on your particular box.
