Hey! This is my go with a remote-controlled train compatible with BRIO tracks. The original models come from MosaicManufacturing.

I have used a very simple RC remote and a geared motor (68 RPM but I recommend going for the 137 RPM version). A small 3-position switch from the bottom selects whether you want to drive the train, shut it off, or if you want to charge the train. The battery is protected with an under/overcharge protection and its charge level is indicated. The battery has enough capacity for a few hours of driving around. There is a small opening under the roof for a charging connector. The front wheels have an anti-split O-ring (ID 17, OD 21) that I sanded a bit for better grip. The rear wheels are mounted on a bearing (ID3, OD8, race width 3). A small spherical magnet (diam. 10 mm) is hidden in the back, that can freely turn in a pocket and thus can connect to any polarity of your other part. The front LED is a regular 5 mm led whereas the flashing LEDs are 2.3x7 mm. I made a simple flip-flop circuit with 2 BC547B transistors to make it more fun.

I have printed the body with a Woodfill filament and well… Except for the hassle with removing supports it turned out just beautifully. Also, the smell is hard to resist :).

It is not an easies build but definitely worth it!
