Intro

Last week I created a spool holder system to be used for printing and storage at the same time (non-hydroscopic filaments, but this system might also be used in closed containers if you like)

Last design met my demands: use and store at the same place. Modular and adjustable system for different spool sizes. However, ‘adjustable’ could be way better, the nuts were making menuts/crazy. Moving them took ages. So there needed to be some changes.

After redesigning three times I came up with this model.

Improvements:

  • No more nuts. 4 different pieces hold the roller parts together. Just press and click
  • 1mm more space for the rolls on the bearings.
  • Adding or removing parts can be done without sliding several parts from the M8 threads, instead just lift the M8 and take away the parts by sliding them down or add new parts by sliding them on the M8 threads from the bottom. Only the bearings stay on the M8 thread.
  • If wanted you can use 8mm rods or tubes instead of M8 threads.
  • 6 different printed parts for every combination you like.

[update]

My shelves are 18mm thick, 25cm to the back and 80cm wide. I''ve added an extra part to guide the filament. Each filament will be ready to be pulled out and inserted into the printer. Each filament spool wil get one of those guides. After ejecting the filament, I can manually rotate the spool to retract the filament back on the spool leaving just a few cm sticking out of the guide, ready to be picked up again for a next job with that filament.

Extra needed:

  • For every spool 4 bearings 22x8x7 (22mm outer diameter, 8mm hole, 7mm wide). 8 if you like in case of 30cm spool.
  • 8mm rods/tubes or M8 threads. How many? How long? Depends on the amount of space you have, the number of spools, the type of spools, etc. One thing is for sure: at least you need 2 rods/tubes/threads in case of spools 30cm and up OR 2 in case of just spools smaller than 30cm OR 4 when using spools 30cm and up and smaller than 30cm

I've created several 3MF files for different configurations. Different files for the connection parts, for single small, single big, double small, double big or small and big combined. Also 2 files for 2 pieces of the big or the small rollers.

For each roller you need 4 side parts (last two files).
