I created this divider to alleviate a long running issue of forks and spoons tipping over or jostling around too much in my 5-slot bamboo cutlery organizer from Target (still widely available on Target.com as of this writing). My set includes small and large spoons, as well as small and large forks.

The dimensions of each slot in the stock organizer wasn’t wide enough to keep two sets side by side securely, and flipping one stack upside-down left too much wiggle room. After experimenting with various heights and depths, I settled on this design, which effectively keeps two stacks (either forks or spoons) from toppling over.

The design is asymmetrical, providing extra room for the larger utensils and holding the smaller utensils snugly.

It uses a dovetail joint to accommodate printing in two parts. No glue should be needed for assembly.

If your dovetail is too tight, you may be able to expand it or open it up a bit by expanding it with needle-nose pliers ever so gently

Print Details:

  • Layer Height: Tested with 0.20, 0.25, and 0.28 mm.

  • Infill: 15% is sufficient.

  • Material: I used Overture matte-finish light brown/tan PLA, which complements the bamboo well.

  • Supports: Organic supports are recommended (and included in the gcode provided). Organic supports resulted in much cleaner dovetail edges.

  • Part Dimensions: the slots (and pieces) are approximately 2.2" wide by 10.85" long when assembled.

Tips:

  • Taller dividers may make it harder to grab utensils, especially when the stack isn’t full.
  • Bamboo can expand or shrink over time, so print a few test layers first to ensure a good fit in a given slot. My dividers fit snugly, requiring slight pressure to seat them fully into the slots.

I hope this design helps you keep your cutlery organized as neatly as it did for me!
